I’m trying the natural look However I’m in my early 50’s going through menopause and when exercising I sweat in my head mostly in the back. I’m also finding that my hair responds best when wet but wearing it wet holds moisture & a damp smell, how can I combat this issue?? Hi my name is Brenda and I am transitioning. It has been about 8 months since I have had a relaxer in my hair. I recently started using As I am, about 2 days ago. After finding that cantu jus don’t work for me. I am looking for a good regimen. I guess what I am saying is that I am clueless about going natural. I do know that I have a curl pattern already and my hair is thick and course. I do trim my hair about every month but I do know the perm is still on my ends or shall I say through out my hair. As far as a regimen I don’t have one. I just wash my hair once a week with Tressme and conditioner with tressemee, then I put the leave in conditioner–As I Am following with the As I Am double butter cream. Then I put twist in it. I take the twist out daily and re-twist. Please Help!!!!!!!


I transitioned for 7 months and then I BC’d on my own…big mistake. My hair was a mess. My only option at 10 pm was to relax it…couldn’t go to work with my hair such a mess. Before I transitioned I wondered what people would think of my natural hair, but quickly came to embrace it and not care what others thought. Weaves and braided hairstyles are often cited to be great protective hairstyles, but they are also require a high level of manipulation (tugging, pulling, twisting etc) which can cause breakage. This is probably what you are seeing when you take out your weave/braids, along with hair that has naturally shedded. You may wish to consider low manipulation hairstyles which utilise only the hair on your head such as twist outs, bantu knots etc.
I have shared my favorite all natural deep conditioner on the blog, and it’s really great for giving some love to your scalp. It’s not a daily conditioner, though. For daily conditioning I stick with a simple apple cider vinegar rinse (ACV). I use a cleansing bottle (like this) and put 1 – 2 TBS of apple cider vinegar and then fill the rest with filtered water. Since I have really short hair I don’t need a lot. I’ll just squirt some on my scalp, massage it in, and then let it sit for 20 – 30 seconds before rinsing out. It makes my hair feel really good!

Other factors – There can be other factors that I can’t necessarily account for. It could be a combination of detox, water, ingredients, and method…. but unless I can talk to you face to face, see you mix your ingredients together, check your water, and watch you shower… I won’t necessarily know why something isn’t working for you. (And let’s  be honest, that would be really awkward.)  Ultimately, if you are serious about natural hair care you have to be willing to experiment and keep trying until you find your sweet spot.
I’ve been natural for a few years, however, I’m having a hard time with it. First of all, I was never given the gift of doing hair lol. When it comes to trimming, I personal only trim when needed. When I trim, I twist my hair in very small two strand twists and snip only the ends. I would not cut where it thins or become uneven because I could have braided or twisted uneven hair that causes it to look thin. If you need to trim, twist your hair in smaller twist and only snip the ends of each twist.
Generally speaking, we recommend washing your hair once per week. Then, you should begin to adjust depending on what your hair needs. You will ultimately find the sweet spot for your hair. I can’t definitively say that washing three times per week is too often for your hair, because each head of hair is different. However, if it’s not working, then I do recommend making some changes. I also caution you to review your entire regimen, not only how often your washing your hair. Make sure you understand the hair care practices that you’re using (including products, heat and various techniques). Finally, it’s often beneficial for new naturals to start a natural hair journal. You can begin documenting how products/techniques work for you.
Do your hair feel brittle? I personally had to limit(almost eliminate) the amount of protein I use on my hair. This made a drastic difference for my hair. I use a leave in conditioner, then a curling cream, after that I will apply a oil if necessary. Oils that work great for me are Jojoba, sweet almond, and avocado. I cant use too much coconut oil, olive oil or hair milk on my hair.
Hi Missqeetee – On average, it is estimated that hair grows about 1/2 inch per month. This means that (if you’re the average person) your will have the possibly of 1/2 inch of growth per month that will be natural hair. It really depends on how long your hair is to determine how long it will take to grow out the relaxer (along with the growth rate). Take your current length and divide it by 1/2. This will give you a good estimate. This doesn’t account for the amount of length actually retained, which could be less than 1/2 inch per month.

Detox – If you are new to natural shampooing or no ‘poo then you have to be prepared for a detox phase. Commercial shampoos strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, which is why most people feel the need to shampoo daily. As your hair is stripped of oils the body signals for the scalp to produce more. In other words: The harsher the shampoo the more oils your body produces. As you wean yourself from commercial shampoos it will take time for your body to re-balance itself and stop producing so much oil. In the meantime you can expect extra grease and general “gross” hair until your body balances back out. This can take anywhere from 2 – 9 weeks. (Yep… this is not for the faint of heart.) The good news is that once your body finds its balance you can expect more manageable hair with only “shampooing” every couple of days (or even only once or twice a week.)

Am equally learning myself about my natural hair.. and i have learn few things which am going to share with you. You need to include moisture shampoo at least very week and try to include a shampoo that has sulfate in it, in order to clean your hair of all the products build up you have… ( you could say for 3 week i only use a moisturizing shampoo and the 4th week i use a shampoo that has sulfate in it) and every time you do shampoo your hair make sure you follow up with deep conditioning your at all cost. There other thing you need to know is about protein and moisture levels in your hair ( go and Google that a learn about it) try to include it in your hair regimen.. moisture your hair all the time.. keep moisture in your hair.. our hair is natural dry because of our tight curl patterns..

Hello! I’m African and I transitioned to natural hair (chopped, grew, relaxed once then grew it natural) two years ago. My hair grows really fast, is curly and my scalp is sensitive and itchy – it’s been so since my teenage years. When i braid or weave my hair, it itches a lot more especially just after & in the first week, so I can’t carry it for long as it gets rough quickly. The same for fixing weaves. As a result I try to avoid doing those but I end up just tying my hair in a bun/ponytail and the curly short strands are flying around which is kind of boring and not suited to the work environment. Plus! My hair is grey, I have grey strands all over intermingled with (more) black (this is hereditary). I haven’t really taken care of my hair well, ‘cos it’s resilient () but I want to change that now – I’d really like to know what can take away the itching and generally how to take care of my hair

I’ve been natural(no relaxer) for about 5 years but in those 5 years I have consistently worn a weave never giving my natural hair time to breath or be treated. I have recently decided to give the weave a break and show my hair some TLC because it needs it badly. My hair is veryy thick and not short, it actually looks and feels a bit healthy until I blow dry it then it feels brittle and very dry. Also my edges are a big problem they are so thin and brittle. I am wondering what tips you have for someone who is not necessarily newly natural but transitioning from weave/braids?
