I was 12 years old the first time I relaxed my hair. At the time, I was going to a majority Black school and I was one of the few girls who still had natural hair. Most days I came to class with my hair thrown into a haphazard ponytail or my 'little girl' pigtails and — you guessed it — I hated it. I was young, impressionable, and it was just one more thing that made me uncool, one more thing that made me different.

There is no right or wrong way to go natural; the important thing is that you are going natural. If you decide to transition to natural hair it’s important to know that the line of demarcation is where your natural hair and relaxed hair intersect. You’ll definitely notice a difference in the texture of your natural hair and your relaxed hair. Relaxers weaken your hair, leaving it dull and damaged over time. So, the difference should be fairly obvious.


Sunscreens have undergone changes, and the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) published new requirements that sunscreens needed to meet starting in 2012. Currently, the FDA suggests an effective sunscreen is rated as SPF 30 or higher and has both UVA and UVB protection (protection against ultraviolet waves of types A and B). In most instances, sunscreen needs to be applied every two hours and each time after a person has gone swimming.
It has been shown that a greater resting metabolic rate (RMR) at baseline, increased dietary restraint, and low frequency of dieting,[8] are associated with weight regain. A meta-analysis in 2001, revealed that using a very low energy diet (VLED) for weight loss or losing more than 20 kg are two predictors of weight maintenance,[9] however, one study that assessed the method of weight loss, declared that patients on VLED gain more weight after the end of the weight loss period, but a self-directed approach was more successful in this regard.[10] Low intake of takeaway and fast foods,[11] reduction of food consumption, adherence to a low-fat diet,[12] and lower sugar-sweetened beverage consumption[13] are some of the behaviors of maintaining the weight loss. Adopting these behaviors as a habit needs supportive strategies by virtue of phone or email.[14]
My hair has been relaxed since the end of sixth grade. Since then, it’s always been struggling to graze my collarbones. I wanted it to grow but was stuck between not really knowing how and not caring, brushing it into ponytail almost every day. (About four years of this and you can imagine how my hair looks now :) I’ve been thinking about it a while, and a few people in my life went natural. That’s only added to my interest. Though I know that the results can differ, they have healthy-looking hair-a huge booster of courage.

From sugary drinks to breakfast cereal, it’s hard to get away from sugary foods. Often the sugar is hidden in canned goods or pre-packaged foods, or even in foods we think are healthy for us, such as fruit juice. The average person takes in about 22 teaspoons of added sugar each day. According to the American Heart Association the daily target should be no more than six level teaspoons for women, and nine for men—that’s for both food and beverages combined.
Each head of hair is different, so there is really no correct answer. However, you can tell when you’re washing your hair too much if it starts to get dull, which means it’s time to scale back on the shampooing. By over-washing your hair, you can wash away your hair’s natural moisture which helps your hair look healthy. If you’re not washing your hair often enough, you can have product build-up which could negatively impact your hair.
Tanisha – Are you still in the process of transitioning from relaxed to natural hair? You mentioned that you didn’t big chop and still have some hair left, were you referring to relaxed hair (ends)? 2. SHAMPOO MINDFULLY. Yes, you still need to shampoo regularly to keep your scalp and hair clean- but you can lengthen the time between washes to 2, 3, or even 4 weeks. Avoid shampoos that contain sulfates or any of these other harmful ingredients, and opt for a mild, sulfate-free shampoo like this Cleansing Avocado Shampoo. If your hair gets dirty more often, alternate shampoo with cowash or follow shampoo with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Wash your hair in sections to prevent tangles.
Assess your activity. How much physical activity do you get in a typical week? How intense is that activity? How much variety do you get in your activity, and how much do you enjoy it? The CDC recommends that adults get at least two and a half hours per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or one hour and 15 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week.
I love this method! Drench hair in ¼ cup of either jojoba oil, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil or sweet almond oil. You can leave this on for a few hours and wrap your hair in a towel or you can wrap your hair in a plastic bag and leave on overnight. Either way, rinse your hair with the baking soda shampoo recipe above then comb through for soft and luscious locks! I personally like to warm the oil on the stove then pour over and massage in to my hair.

Meal replacement, low carbohydrate-low glycemic index (GI) diet, high protein intake, and moderate fat consumption have shown some positive effects on weight maintenance. However, the results are controversial. A Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH)-type diet seems helpful for weight maintenance although the need for more study has remained. Some special behaviors were associated with less weight regain, such as, not being awake late at night, drinking lower amount of sugar-sweetened beverages, and following a healthy pattern. Some special foods have been suggested for weight maintenance. However, the roles of specific foods are not confirmed.
Hello how are you?, my brother and I are both trying to go natural but me and him having problems. His hair is getting bald spots and he suffering from trying to have it grow. I had cut my hair a while ago and my top is long and my back is short. Ppl believe it won’t grow back at all but I don’t believe that. I use to think that having natural hair was not cool but now I want my hair to be longer and fuller. We have dry hair and it’s dull looking and lifeless. I understand what this article is saying but idk where to start for some reason because I process things differently. We heard that getting organic, unrefined, and cold pressed products are better. Is that true? How can I get my hair long and fuller like some natural ladies online? I cry because I don’t regret cutting my hair but I regret not keeping it as well. What products should my brother and I use? What is the best way to take care of our hair since it’s dull, lifeless, and dry. Please help me. :(

What I have learned about my hair so far is that my hair NEEDS a lot of moisture. I tried a few products and have found that Shea Moisture makes my hair feel really dry and brittle like, Carol’s Daughter is ok, I thought it was great until I tried Cantu’s products. Cantu is WONDERFUL! Originally, the thought of not washing my hair and simply co-washing seemed nasty and unclean. Now, I LOVE to co-wash, especially with Cantu. I have also learned if I do not wash my hair at least once a week my hair will fall out VERY BADLY. When I say bad I mean it looks like I am standing on a hair rug in the shower. It is everywhere, on the walls, on the shower curtain, on my face, on my shoulders and other body parts, it is a mess. That is when I tried to co-wash and I washed my hair every 2-3 days and bam very very little shedding. I also use the leave in conditioner. I did not know that product is not supposed to remain white on your hair after application. This too let me know that I have low porosity hair. Side note: my hair is extremely thick, so the extreme shedding is not noticeable what-so-ever.
Ah, the ultimate Catch-22: If your hair is greasy, experts will tell you to stop washing it daily. But (depending on your texture, of course) if you don’t wash it daily, it gets…greasy. So what’s a girl to do? Dry shampoo. This one is an all-natural and surprisingly simple blend of four starches — arrowroot and rice powder, kaolin clay, and baking soda — plus two essential oils (rose geranium and palmarosaa) for a light, blossomy scent. The sprinkle-on formula takes a little getting used to, though the non-aerosol delivery system is less potentially harmful to your lungs.
Also, my hair is around 5 inches long. I used my cell phone to measure my hair, lol, iPhone 5c. It is a finger nail length longer than the phone. I have not found any beautiful natural styles to try. All the beautiful styles are for long or very long natural hair. I do not care for an afro, ON ME. I have to be careful of looking too masculine that can be very easy for me. Right now and to me, I look a bit manly when I wear my afro. However, I do enjoy wearing my afro. But, I am married and that is not what my husband married. My hair is on my body and blah blah blah. But, that is changing things that attracted my husband to me. That is like my husband being attracted to very large Nicki Minaj like butts and I go get a butt reduction. So, going from straight relaxed (and unhealthy) hair to natural was a year long discussion/fight with my husband. But, he saw how passionate I was about going natural. So, I still need to keep it feminine and attractive all while being natural.
