Hopefully it can guide those who are trying to transition themselves — or even those just curious about the options. And for those who are already natural? Perhaps you can relate to my journey.

There are problems with some of the advice that’s typically given out online. Some natural hair advisors or product manufacturers will tell you that you need to find the perfect products (sometimes called holy grail products) or simply master a specific technique, like protective styling or the baggy method, to have a successful natural hair journey.

I would like to say that I and all 4 of my daughters, which are all grown have natural hair. We do not use relaxers which strip and deplete the natural beauty of hair. Another explanation is curl pattern and texture. I personally have at least 3 that I can identify… lol My front is straight on the ends and the longer it goes, the straighter it gets. I cut a few inches about 3 years ago because I thought it was heat damaged, but it wasn’t. It is still strand in the front. I just accept the straightness and work with it. Now my crown area has a coarser texture, the most shrinkage and the tightest curls.

“I had pizza last night — I know it’s bad!” As a nutrition coach, I often hear this from my clients. As a food lover myself, I’ve never been a fan of labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” since it can associate emotional negativity with eating. I worry it can also promote impossible expectations — the idea of needing to eat “perfectly” to be successful in weight loss.

The first step that will help with your frustration is to change your mindset from nappy, hard, won’t grow to being able to accept your hair and discover its beauty. Long hair is a combination of internal and external components. Generally, as long as you are relatively healthy (internally), your hair is growing because growth is an internal process. Externally, specifically, your hair habits, have to align with your hair goals. If you are constantly snipping and trimming, roughly handling, over manipulating, heat damaging, etc… your hair will never reach it maximum potential.
Most nutrition experts suggest getting between 20 and 35 percent of your daily calories from fat, and many now advocate for more. Be vigilant about including fat in the form of nutritious whole foods (think avocados, nuts, fish), healthy oils (cold-pressed olive, seed, nut), and some appetite-satisfying saturated-fat indulgences (real butter and cream, grassfed meats, coconut).

A low carbohydrate diet, high MUFA diet, high carbohydrate-low GI diet, high carbohydrate-low GI diet plus intensive support or nurse support, and low CHO / Pro diet have no major effects on the maintenance of weight loss in comparison with a low-fat diet, high protein-low GI diet, high MUFA diet plus intensive support or nurse support, and high CHO / Pro diet, respectively.[18,19,20,21]

I have shared my favorite all natural deep conditioner on the blog, and it’s really great for giving some love to your scalp. It’s not a daily conditioner, though. For daily conditioning I stick with a simple apple cider vinegar rinse (ACV). I use a cleansing bottle (like this) and put 1 – 2 TBS of apple cider vinegar and then fill the rest with filtered water. Since I have really short hair I don’t need a lot. I’ll just squirt some on my scalp, massage it in, and then let it sit for 20 – 30 seconds before rinsing out. It makes my hair feel really good!

I want to do it but the thing is, I’m in high school. And still living under my parents’ roof. I need selling points for them. I have been a natural for about 3 years now and my hair looks like I just big chopped it. It did grow a little bit but the growth for 3 years is really disappointing. I watch YouTube videos almost everyday on how to create a hair regimen because I believe I don’t even have one. My hair is always in styles like box braids and crochet braids. I hear protective styling is very good to help grow hair but nice my hair is short most styles won’t look good. Especially since I’m starting high school in a couple of months I will not want anyone to see my natural hair because it’s one of my insecurities. Hey Kate. Im 16 and I’ve been transitioning since April 2013. The back of my hair is natural but the front still has some relaxed ends. I get braids & leave them in for 2 or 3 months. & I oil my scalp 2 twice a Week. When I take my hair out I usually get blowouts at a Dominican salon & have them cut off some of my ends. This helps you not have to big chop until you have enough growth
If I'm being totally honest, having relaxed hair wasn't that awful: I didn't get burns, my hair didn't fall out, and it wasn't difficult to deal with. My stylist told me that because of my looser curl pattern, I only had to hit the salon once every six months for a touch up, compared to friends who went every few weeks. To this day, I think her professional advice is what saved my hair from serious damage — any more chemical treatments and it could have been a different story.
Great article. Like most sites you say to use protective styles. With a twa this is not possible. My hair is grey and has multiple textures. I have gone through several products & have not found any that I love but are okay. Most of the curl puddings leave my hair crunchy, so those went out the window. I wash weekly and spritz with h2o, leave in conditioner and oil every day. Any suggestions?

Hello! I’m African and I transitioned to natural hair (chopped, grew, relaxed once then grew it natural) two years ago. My hair grows really fast, is curly and my scalp is sensitive and itchy – it’s been so since my teenage years. When i braid or weave my hair, it itches a lot more especially just after & in the first week, so I can’t carry it for long as it gets rough quickly. The same for fixing weaves. As a result I try to avoid doing those but I end up just tying my hair in a bun/ponytail and the curly short strands are flying around which is kind of boring and not suited to the work environment. Plus! My hair is grey, I have grey strands all over intermingled with (more) black (this is hereditary). I haven’t really taken care of my hair well, ‘cos it’s resilient () but I want to change that now – I’d really like to know what can take away the itching and generally how to take care of my hair
The great ability of a twa is that the style within itself is a protective style. The hairs are tightly together packed down and the hair is not brushing the shoulders. So in essence, a TWA is a protective style within itself. The idea is to be sure to protect your hair at night and keep it moisturized and supple and using protein when you need to. You didn’t mention protein. How are you incorporating protein into your regimen.
