My hair is always wrapped in either a cotton head scarf or silk scarf. Throughout the year my hair is mostly in box braids for at the most 3 months and in Afro form for 1 month. I wash my hair in braid every 2 weeks. My mom says my hair doesn’t grow because my grandmas also doesn’t grow – implying that it’s something I’ve inherited. I’d like to believe that this can’t be true and I hope it doesn’t mean that I should give up on my hair length goals just because it’s something I’ve “inherited”
If I'm being totally honest, having relaxed hair wasn't that awful: I didn't get burns, my hair didn't fall out, and it wasn't difficult to deal with. My stylist told me that because of my looser curl pattern, I only had to hit the salon once every six months for a touch up, compared to friends who went every few weeks. To this day, I think her professional advice is what saved my hair from serious damage — any more chemical treatments and it could have been a different story.

It’s no secret that restaurants in America pride themselves on huge portions of food and people scratch their heads at the insane obesity levels in America. Hi! I have recently started to think about going natural again as I feel relaxing it all the time and getting appointments is long. I’m also going to university soon so I will be away from home. My mum said I shouldn’t big chop my hair I should transition. I was wondering if I keep plaiting it and so on will the relaxed ends gradually fall off? Or would I have to trim it? And how long from transitioning will fully natural? Also what are hot oil treatments?
Very clear informative article. My only problem is her support a broad scale public policy that would tell people what to eat. We are not a communist country. The United States is a republic – a constitutional republic where people believe that they can govern themselves. The notion that government should tell me what to eat is the absolute tyranny and tells me that this doctor needs to have a lesson in civics as well the pitfalls of scientism. I suspect she is thinking in terms of cost of care which is a utilitarian Marxist approach to human life. I don’t know what happened to this generation that they are so ignorant when it comes to Liberty and freedom versus government encroachment and parenting.

I was 12 years old the first time I relaxed my hair. At the time, I was going to a majority Black school and I was one of the few girls who still had natural hair. Most days I came to class with my hair thrown into a haphazard ponytail or my 'little girl' pigtails and — you guessed it — I hated it. I was young, impressionable, and it was just one more thing that made me uncool, one more thing that made me different.
Also, my hair is around 5 inches long. I used my cell phone to measure my hair, lol, iPhone 5c. It is a finger nail length longer than the phone. I have not found any beautiful natural styles to try. All the beautiful styles are for long or very long natural hair. I do not care for an afro, ON ME. I have to be careful of looking too masculine that can be very easy for me. Right now and to me, I look a bit manly when I wear my afro. However, I do enjoy wearing my afro. But, I am married and that is not what my husband married. My hair is on my body and blah blah blah. But, that is changing things that attracted my husband to me. That is like my husband being attracted to very large Nicki Minaj like butts and I go get a butt reduction. So, going from straight relaxed (and unhealthy) hair to natural was a year long discussion/fight with my husband. But, he saw how passionate I was about going natural. So, I still need to keep it feminine and attractive all while being natural.
Hi there – I would recommend using a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup if any. Follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. From there, every 1-2 days, use the LOC or LOC method to moisturize your hair (try both to see which one works best for your hair). Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week. Follow the directions on the packaging. Avoid silicones. Examine your ends every 6-8 weeks and trim if needed. Use a gentle clarifying shampoo once a month or so. There is so much info out there about various routines, but this is a simple start that you can add to and adjust as you go. Keeping a journal to track what works and what doesn’t is great advice. Best of luck!

Common sense would tell us that the more people are well the less the need for public health, medicines and health facilities. I agree with David (9th July comment) with regard to diet. Whole grains can indeed have the effect of spiking blood sugar (whole grain bread as just one example) and creating gut inflammation, and therefore low-grade, sub-acute inflammation in general. This is the biggest contributor to chronic disease that we are facing, long-term inflammation. The standard food pyramid is, in my opinion, all wrong. I believe we should eat a more Mediterranean diet, and minimise the grain-based carbohydrates, and the sugars. Then we are considerably further down the track towards a healthy diet that promotes longevity. Of course, all of the other factors mentioned are important as well, but what we put into our mouths is probably the most important, given the skyrocketing rates of obesity first world countries are facing, and now even asian countries as well, who are well and truly catching up.

I want to do it but the thing is, I’m in high school. And still living under my parents’ roof. I need selling points for them. 2. SHAMPOO MINDFULLY. Yes, you still need to shampoo regularly to keep your scalp and hair clean- but you can lengthen the time between washes to 2, 3, or even 4 weeks. Avoid shampoos that contain sulfates or any of these other harmful ingredients, and opt for a mild, sulfate-free shampoo like this Cleansing Avocado Shampoo. If your hair gets dirty more often, alternate shampoo with cowash or follow shampoo with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Wash your hair in sections to prevent tangles.

Some specific behavior also may be effective in weight maintenance. Previous publications have shown that sleep deprivation may be associated with obesity and central adiposity. Therefore, whether or not sleep duration is related to weight maintenance needs to be made clear in the future. Other behaviors also need to be assessed in this regard.
