I have been a natural for about 3 years now and my hair looks like I just big chopped it. It did grow a little bit but the growth for 3 years is really disappointing. I just need help on how to create a regimen because all I do to my hair is Shampoo+ conditioner on Saturday and then I usually put it back into braids and then I leave it alone which I shouldn’t. I need your help!! I want my hair to grow but can I do it while it’s in box braids?
I haven’t gone natural yet, but I’m planning too very soon. Right now I’m wearing box braids. Pretty much my whole life I have been doing braids relaxers and weaves. But now I want to go natural and I’m not sure exactly where to start. Should I start by trimming split ends, brushing it all through, moisturizing my scalp, cutting off all my relaxed ends?Between my weaves and braided hairstyles, when my hair is natural for a couple of days, Iv’e noticed that it breaks off a lot becomes flat (after I wash it) and is super dry and incredibly tangled. Should I brush my hair because it’s so tangley? Or should I not because it will tear it out? I’m so lost! HELP!

Once upon a time, I created a recipe for an all natural shampoo. It was a much better alternative to the harsh shampoos that I had used for most of my life. After some time, however, I found that it was making my scalp really dry and irritated. After doing some research I learned the value of having a pH balance shampoo recipe. Other factors – There can be other factors that I can’t necessarily account for. It could be a combination of detox, water, ingredients, and method…. but unless I can talk to you face to face, see you mix your ingredients together, check your water, and watch you shower… I won’t necessarily know why something isn’t working for you. (And let’s  be honest, that would be really awkward.)  Ultimately, if you are serious about natural hair care you have to be willing to experiment and keep trying until you find your sweet spot.
For those of you just starting out on the natural hair care journey, you are bound to see “No ‘Poo” everywhere you go. Don’t worry, it does NOT have anything to do with your bowels. It’s a short term for “No Shampoo.” The most common approach to No ‘Poo is using baking soda for washing and an apple cider vinegar rinse. I personally do not like this method as the baking soda was so harsh on my scalp. I later learned that it’s because it’s not in line with our scalp’s natural pH. That’s why I created my pH Balanced Shampoo recipe. Some people, however, LOVE the baking soda method… and I say, “If’ it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”  If you still haven’t found the best method for you, stick with me. I have lots of ideas in the second part of this post.

When you plan for an indulgence, it also allows you to thoughtfully select and prepare the food. So in essence, a TWA is a protective style within itself. The idea is to be sure to protect your hair at night and keep it moisturized and supple and using protein when you need to. You didn’t mention protein. How are you incorporating protein into your regimen.
Tanisha – Are you still in the process of transitioning from relaxed to natural hair? You mentioned that you didn’t big chop and still have some hair left, were you referring to relaxed hair (ends)? Just curious if you’re struggling to manage the multiple textures because you still have relaxed hair that hasn’t been chopped off or grown out. Let me know…thanks.
Hi there – I would recommend using a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup if any. Follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. From there, every 1-2 days, use the LOC or LOC method to moisturize your hair (try both to see which one works best for your hair). Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week. Follow the directions on the packaging. Avoid silicones. Examine your ends every 6-8 weeks and trim if needed. Use a gentle clarifying shampoo once a month or so. There is so much info out there about various routines, but this is a simple start that you can add to and adjust as you go. Keeping a journal to track what works and what doesn’t is great advice. Best of luck!

Very clear informative article. My only problem is her support a broad scale public policy that would tell people what to eat. We are not a communist country. The United States is a republic – a constitutional republic where people believe that they can govern themselves. The notion that government should tell me what to eat is the absolute tyranny and tells me that this doctor needs to have a lesson in civics as well the pitfalls of scientism. I suspect she is thinking in terms of cost of care which is a utilitarian Marxist approach to human life. I don’t know what happened to this generation that they are so ignorant when it comes to Liberty and freedom versus government encroachment and parenting.

Am equally learning myself about my natural hair.. and i have learn few things which am going to share with you. You need to include moisture shampoo at least very week and try to include a shampoo that has sulfate in it, in order to clean your hair of all the products build up you have… ( you could say for 3 week i only use a moisturizing shampoo and the 4th week i use a shampoo that has sulfate in it) and every time you do shampoo your hair make sure you follow up with deep conditioning your at all cost. There other thing you need to know is about protein and moisture levels in your hair ( go and Google that a learn about it) try to include it in your hair regimen.. moisture your hair all the time.. keep moisture in your hair.. our hair is natural dry because of our tight curl patterns..

I share that if you are taking medication that is affecting your strands, not relaxing your hair is definitely a benefit. I would definitely bing or google your medication to see what others experiences have been. Speak with your physician as well as they can offer a different perspective. I know that certain blood pressure meds can affect your hair but so can having a baby or anything that make your hormones increase or decrease.

Thank you for your comment! Depending on the look you are going for, will greatly determine if you want to add a water base product or an oil base product to your hair. When my hair is in a wash & go type style, I can add water based products. However, when I am wearing a stretched style and I do not want shrinkage, I will use an oil based product, staying clear of wetness.

Repeated dieting can actually lower metabolism and thus make your body retain more of what you put into it. Increasing exercise while not giving your body more food to compensate can also increase body fat storage. Dieting also increases heart disease risk, when compared to simply gaining a little weight. If you really need to lose weight, the most effective way is to increase exercise and cutting only a little food, while concentrating on fruits, veggies, and high fiber foods.
A low carbohydrate diet, high MUFA diet, high carbohydrate-low GI diet, high carbohydrate-low GI diet plus intensive support or nurse support, and low CHO / Pro diet have no major effects on the maintenance of weight loss in comparison with a low-fat diet, high protein-low GI diet, high MUFA diet plus intensive support or nurse support, and high CHO / Pro diet, respectively.[18,19,20,21]
Just for today, replace some of the carbohydrates (rice, pasta, cereal, breads) in your diet with protein (meat, beans, egg, fish, etc.) at each meal. Researchers at the University of Illinois put people on either a traditional high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet or a moderate-protein diet. At the end of four months, all study participants lost the same amount of weight, but those who ate more protein lost 22 percent more fat and gained more muscle, leaving them looking fit and trim.
