Hello, I have been natural for about 6 months now and have gotten pretty good growth from what i can see but my problem is with building up the self confidence i need to actually wear my beautiful natural hair. I did the big chop and before the big chop have never had short hair i’m 22 and feel as though if i where to wear my coils that society would view it as ” inappropriate” or that the women at my job would view it as unprofessional. This site is very detailed & so I must say thank you! I’ve been chemical free since Feb. 2011 and I did the BC on Oct 2011 n now I’m loving my natural 2 the fullest! I have my good & bad hair days but with trial & errors and the advice from this lovely website, I’m sure that I’m going to be alright! lol.. Being a military spouse & a mother of 3 (my schedule is so busy 2 where I don’t have hrs 2 do my hair like I use 2) with my natural I can do quick hair styles & be on the go within minutes!!! My 4 yr old daughter is natural & her thick hair is half way down her back! I’m aiming to get back there one day & with patience & great care of my hair & body, I shall get there! The great ability of a twa is that the style within itself is a protective style. The hairs are tightly together packed down and the hair is not brushing the shoulders. So in essence, a TWA is a protective style within itself. The idea is to be sure to protect your hair at night and keep it moisturized and supple and using protein when you need to. You didn’t mention protein. How are you incorporating protein into your regimen.

Hi there – I would recommend using a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup if any. Follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. From there, every 1-2 days, use the LOC or LOC method to moisturize your hair (try both to see which one works best for your hair). Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week. Follow the directions on the packaging. Avoid silicones. Examine your ends every 6-8 weeks and trim if needed. Use a gentle clarifying shampoo once a month or so. There is so much info out there about various routines, but this is a simple start that you can add to and adjust as you go. Keeping a journal to track what works and what doesn’t is great advice. Best of luck!
Another explanation is curl pattern and texture. I personally have at least 3 that I can identify… lol My front is straight on the ends and the longer it goes, the straighter it gets. I cut a few inches about 3 years ago because I thought it was heat damaged, but it wasn’t. It is still strand in the front. I just accept the straightness and work with it. Now my crown area has a coarser texture, the most shrinkage and the tightest curls.

I can’t even start by describing my hair texture. I’m a 21 year old white girl, leaving in Seychelles. I was born with beautiful curly blonde hair (they called me Goldilocks back in my youth days). I was still so young, my mum was the one who always combed by hair to go to school in the mornings, by the time i was 10, my hair was really long and she got fed up with detangling. She decided straight hair was more manageable so she had my beautiful hair relaxed without even thinking about the concequences. We live next to the beach and here in Seychelles the weather is very hot and sunny, so you can imagine what that contributed to my hair. My hair was ruined. After a while she had it cut really short, but it never went back to the way it was. So she kept taking me to hairdressers to have it relaxed. After a while everyone kept criticising my hair, especially my family who doesn’t understand the struggle of it cause they have straight silky hair. Everyone always has something to say. I stoppped relaxing my hair about five years ago or so, and a hairdresser suggested i try out a relaxer perm. It was okay when it was done but after two weeks or so my hair would simply go back to the way it was. And then they suggested i do Keratin. The last time i’ve been to the hairdresser was in December 2015. I was so fustrated with my hair and poeple who didn’t understand that my hair is just simply damaged and dry and that no matter what i do in it, it will not go back to the way it was .EVER! So i decided to just stop everything and go natural. Ofcourse i had no idea what that meant! I had never dyed my hair so i decided this was my last chance to ever have my hair dyed if i wanted to go natural,and i was thinking it would be easier to distinguish between the damaged parts to the new growth. My natural hair is about four inches long now. And theres alot of breakage and shredding. To tell you the truth i was so scared. Hi there, I saw your comment and realized that I use two of those products! I use kinky curly for shampoo and leave-in, shea moisture for conditioner, and several others for styling and custards and so on. I’d suggest trying each one out and seeing how they work for your hair until you find the right combination for your hair type and texture! Hope that helped:)
Am equally learning myself about my natural hair.. and i have learn few things which am going to share with you. You need to include moisture shampoo at least very week and try to include a shampoo that has sulfate in it, in order to clean your hair of all the products build up you have… ( you could say for 3 week i only use a moisturizing shampoo and the 4th week i use a shampoo that has sulfate in it) and every time you do shampoo your hair make sure you follow up with deep conditioning your at all cost. There other thing you need to know is about protein and moisture levels in your hair ( go and Google that a learn about it) try to include it in your hair regimen.. moisture your hair all the time.. keep moisture in your hair.. our hair is natural dry because of our tight curl patterns..
One way to incorporate more protection into your natural hair journey is to utilize protective hairstyles. A protective hairstyle generally requires minimal upkeep, gives you the opportunity to moisturize as needed, and it keeps the ends of your hair safe and tucked away – protected. You can successfully grow your hair quite long with the appropriate selection of products, proper styling techniques, and general handling/maintenance. 

I had a long conversation with a fellow 3C-er at Curlfest about this product. This styler can be used for almost anything and everything, but if you’re looking for smooth, stretched curls, the key is knowing how to use it. Liberally apply this from roots to ends on soaking wet hair (not damp!) and it’ll lock in whatever twist-out your heart desires with zero stickiness.

Assess your activity. How much physical activity do you get in a typical week? How intense is that activity? How much variety do you get in your activity, and how much do you enjoy it? The CDC recommends that adults get at least two and a half hours per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or one hour and 15 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week.

1. RETAIN MOISTURE. Even if you have low porosity hair, 4C hair needs to be kept moisturized. The kinks and coils of 4C curls prevent the distribution of sebum (natural oil produced by your scalp) throughout your hair. This allows your hair to dry out faster than other curl patterns, so you need to take extra precautions to keep your hair moisturized. Find a good moisturizer AND a good sealant. Oils like coconut oil and olive oil, and creams like Shea butter are effective at sealing moisture in your hair. If you wear a protective style, don’t forget to moisturize regularly!

Observational studies have shown that people who engage in mentally stimulating activities may be less likely to develop dementia. But Knopman notes that such studies don't prove cause and effect, so it's not clear if mentally stimulating activities protect against dementia or whether people with healthier brains are drawn to those activities in the first place.


Black natural hair (i.e., African American natural hair) is sometimes labeled as nappy hair that needs to be corrected by a relaxer. We’ve heard of situations where women have been discriminated against in the workplace due to having natural hairstyles, which are deemed unprofessional by some employers. Others have been denied jobs or promotions because of their natural hair. Natural hair has also caused relationship issues for many couples.

When it comes to trimming, I personal only trim when needed. When I trim, I twist my hair in very small two strand twists and snip only the ends. I would not cut where it thins or become uneven because I could have braided or twisted uneven hair that causes it to look thin. If you need to trim, twist your hair in smaller twist and only snip the ends of each twist.
My hair has been relaxed since the end of sixth grade. Since then, it’s always been struggling to graze my collarbones. I wanted it to grow but was stuck between not really knowing how and not caring, brushing it into ponytail almost every day. (About four years of this and you can imagine how my hair looks now :) I’ve been thinking about it a while, and a few people in my life went natural. That’s only added to my interest. Though I know that the results can differ, they have healthy-looking hair-a huge booster of courage.
Great article. Like most sites you say to use protective styles. With a twa this is not possible. My hair is grey and has multiple textures. I have gone through several products & have not found any that I love but are okay. Most of the curl puddings leave my hair crunchy, so those went out the window. I wash weekly and spritz with h2o, leave in conditioner and oil every day. Any suggestions?

Selecting your initial set of natural hair products is important and many naturals spend quite a bit of time trying new products in an attempt to find the perfect products (i.e., holy grail products) for their hair. You must get to know your hair to understand which products will work best for you.

Diets such as DASH or addition of components like gelatin, capsaicin, and green tea have been tried for weight maintenance, but they need more investigation to clarify their long-term effects. Although the DASH diet has numerous health results, its effect on weight loss and maintaining it is still under dispute. As its recommended servings are similar to those that have been discussed earlier, a lot more research is needed in this area.
To identify studies regarding weight maintenance, with an emphasis on dietary interventions, a complete search of articles was carried out by using PubMed and SCOPUS. The studies were restricted to those in English. The key words included ‘overweight’, ‘obesity’, ‘weight maintenance’, ‘weight regain’, and ‘diet therapy’. Articles from 1974 to 2013 were included. We found 75 articles. We excluded studies published only as abstracts and those involving behavioral therapy or exercise per se. Finally we evaluated 26 studies.

Studies have found that couples who cohabitate before marriage are at a greater risk of divorce. I, personally, found these studies troubling. Or rather, I found the fact that people have flocked to them as proof that couples shouldn’t live together before marriage very troubling. It just isn’t practical or reasonable to state that living together before marriage wouldn’t give a couple some advantages. I’ll go so far as to say that not living together before marriage is dangerous (I’ll get to that later). It doesn’t matter how much time you spend with a partner—you don’t know what it’s like to live together until you live together. Some couples will say, “Well we practically live together.” No—you don’t. You always have your own place to escape to and the knowledge that you have that place. That changes everything. I’d like to dispute the dangerous belief that couples shouldn’t live together until marriage. Sure, couples who live together first are at higher risk of divorce, but I don’t think it has much to do with living together. Here are the actual probable causes.
Hello! I’m African and I transitioned to natural hair (chopped, grew, relaxed once then grew it natural) two years ago. My hair grows really fast, is curly and my scalp is sensitive and itchy – it’s been so since my teenage years. When i braid or weave my hair, it itches a lot more especially just after & in the first week, so I can’t carry it for long as it gets rough quickly. The same for fixing weaves. As a result I try to avoid doing those but I end up just tying my hair in a bun/ponytail and the curly short strands are flying around which is kind of boring and not suited to the work environment. Plus! My hair is grey, I have grey strands all over intermingled with (more) black (this is hereditary). I haven’t really taken care of my hair well, ‘cos it’s resilient () but I want to change that now – I’d really like to know what can take away the itching and generally how to take care of my hair

LeCheminant and his colleagues used a liquid form of very low energy diet (VLED) for weight loss. Subsequently, they randomized participants to receive a structured meal plan combined with either two-meal replacements or orlistat and physical activity. There was no significant difference in weight change between the groups during weight maintenance.[3]

My advice to you: When washing use lukewarm water, because hot water can strip the scalp of sebum, which is the protective oil that acts as a natural conditioner and gives your hair its shine. When you create your initial natural hair regimen, begin by washing your hair once per week. Record how your hair responds for a few weeks, in your natural hair journal, and make adjustments to your regimen as necessary.
